The amount of homework depends on what the school wants to accomplish for the students and how efficient they are with the use of in-school time. Work that SHOULD be independent is best done on a student's "own time," so that in-school time is used for work that is best done in groups or with a lecturer. On that model I think the traditional school day is too long, but that's my own idea about that...:-)

I would think appropriate homework for an eighth-grader
would be the independent readings he would need to
accomplish in the subject areas, either to prepare for or
to follow up on the lectures. In science and math,
appropriate homework will give him time to practice the
skills (equations) he has learned in class.

Even in our homeschool I try to provide some "homework" for
my sixth-grader, leaving her independent to complete her
math lessons and to set up her study area for Latin, though
I help her with that. I also expect both her and the
4th-grader to read alone daily from novels, mostly, related
to our subject areas.

If you're concerned your school is doing too much or too
little, try to focus on the content area and the teacher's
purpose for the homework rather than on the raw time
"assigned."

Just some thoughts--hope they help!
