Debbie, we've had two children use Saxon in the grammar stage. The first used it all the way from second grade until about half-way through algebra 1 (with the exception of one year when he was in a school that used MUS). He did fine with it until Algebra 1/2, and seems to have learned all the concepts that were taught before that. The second used it from second grade through 65. For her, 54 and 65 were not good texts - practising a new skill for only one lesson before moving on to something new was not enough for her, in spite of the built-in review. She has benefitted much more from texts that stay with one type of problem for a longer time before moving on to new things, and which group like practise problems together. So I think how well Saxon works for any individual child in the grammar stage may depend on how well he or she grasps and retains math concepts. That sounds a little wishy-washy, doesn't it? Hope it helps a little, anyway.

>... I am becoming concerned after hearing some negative comments that Saxon 54, 65, 76 doesn't teach the "concepts" and therefore cause many children to struggle when they hit pre-algebra and up. I would like to hear from anyone who has used Saxon in the grammer stage and how it affected learning/grasping the higher math....
