[s] IEW is putting out a new spelling program (not even due to come out til Sept 99). It's called "The Phonetic Zoo: and they describe it as "Excellence in Spelling". It's described on IEW's website and in their newest catalog (No. 7, Summer '99). Link to website: http://www.writing-edu.com/ Basically, it starts at 3rd grade, has 3 levels (each costs at least $85) and is multi-sensory. Very independent (!)....kids listen to their lessons via audiocassette. It sounds very "classical" in that it each lesson uses a rule, jingle or chant to learn one of the "35 most important spelling rules". Lesson follows with 15 words that either follow or break the rule. Auditory in that they use the cassettes; visual in that they use these cards with animal names on them that demonstrate the rule (Lynx/Hyena/Snipe). Success is "guaranteed" (??!??). Happy "obsessing" over yet another consideration! KC |
