Hi! We began using this with our second grader two months ago, and love it. It is the most logically presented text we have used so far this year, having gone through Miquon, Abeka, Scott Foresman and MUS. Primary Math teaches in far greater depth than any other books we have used, one concept at a time. There is considerable practice within each lesson, and reviews (called *revisions*) every few lessons. The strongest feature which we admire about this program is the mental math techniques it teaches. No finger counting allowed here! The problems are all solved horizontally in the first few grades, in order to encourage the student to operate in their head and not on paper. The downside of this program is that the TM is virtually useless to a homeschooling parent, but I have not had any problem using it without help (and I am no math-person!). In Singapore, there is a strong oral and written drill component which is not addressed within the books, but we are developing our own as we go along. The books are designed for teaching on a year-round basis, and are quite advanced. We have just finished our first lesson in division, and we are in the 2nd half of 1st grade. If you were to order these, it is usually recommended that the student go back at least one grade level. They may be able to solve the problems at their regular level, but the mental techniques used would be difficult to pick up unless you backtrack. PM contains the best of Scott Foresman and MUS, but is far more complete than either two combined. I would highly encourage any parent or administrator to take a long, hard look at Primary Math to use with their students. My dh and I believe that it is an excellent fit with the classical method. Please feel free to ask more questions, Angela (VA) |
