We somehow received a catalog from Recorded Books, Inc.: Complete and Unabridged Audiobooks for a Multisensory Approach to Reading, Grades K-12. While the appeal to a multisensory approach doesn't attract me, some of the audio tapes and books within the cover of this catalog do. So wanted to pass this along. I would see books on tape (accompanied by the actual print book) as valuable in some school settings. For instance, CUNY Professor of English Michael Murphy reads all of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, 13 hours worth on 9 cassettes, and includes tidbits about history, symbolism, language - for $75 with the softcover book for $18.50. Or you can train your students/childrens' ears for Shakespeare and a lesser price. Hamlet - a full-cast recording of 2 hours on 2 cassettes in $28, softcover book $3.95 Julius Caesar - full-cast recording featuring Sir Ralph Richardson, 2 hours on 2 cassettes, $22, book $3.95. King Lear, 3 hours, 3 cassettes for $26, book $3.95 Macbeth - full-cast recording featuring Anthony Quayle as Macbeth and Gwen Ffrangcon-Davies as Lady Macbeth, 2 hours on 2 cassettes, $24, book $4.95 A Midsummer Night's Dream, features British stage actor Paul Scofield as Oberon, 2 hours on 2 cassettes for $22, book $3.95 A Midsummer Night's Dream narrated by Barbara Caruso, retold for young students, 1/2 hour on one cassette for $10, book $16.99 Much Ado About Nothing - Rex Harrison as Benedick, Rachel Roberts as Beatrice - 2 hours on 2 cassettes, $22, book $3.95 The Sonnets of Shakespeare, narrated by Frank Muller - 5 dozen of them, on one 1 1/2 hour cassette for $10, book $10.95 The Taming of the Shrew, features Trevor Howard and Margaret Leighton, 2 hours on 2 cassettes for $22, book $4.95 Besides Shakespeare, I also noted: 29 classic John Donne (16th century English poet) poems, narrated by Edward Herrmann, 1 1/2 hour cassette for $10. the Arthurian Legends - Young Arthur, Young Guinevere, Young Lancelot, Young Merlin - all by Robert San Souci and narrated by Virginia Leishman, each on one cassette, each $10 The Iliad The Odyssey Pinocchio (the original Italian classic - 6 hours on 4 cassettes) and others.... But you'll find you skip about 20 for every one you might find good for classical Christian education. It's a very large catalog, however- nearly 200 pages with small print. A lot of these come with Teacher Guides around $10, but can't say whether I'd recommend them or not.
